Sam Schollenberger's Junior Recital
Sam played his third full-length recital last night in Oberlin’s Fairchild Chapel. He was clearly self-assured and in-the-zone as he unfurled major works by Bach, Giuliani and more. Sam’s tone was beautiful, and his pacing and phrasing were faultless as he presented long-form masterworks with apparent ease. He opened with the iconic third Violin Sonata in C, BWV 1005.

He handled the period-infused phrasing and complex counterpoint with confidence and clarity. And the work’s final Allegro Assai simply sizzled.
Next up was Giuliani’s third Rossiniana, Op 121. The bel canto lines sang and the virtuosic flourishes unfolded easily in Sam’s hands. The audience loved it.
Sam finished his performance with a rousing presentation of the brilliant third movement of Asencio’s Suite Valenciana. He got an easy standing ovation.
