Rio Manzanares' Senior Recital
Rio Manzanares played his final Oberlin recital today to a large audience in the sparkling surroundings of Stull Recital Hall. The tall wrap-around windows in Stull lit the proceedings beautifully, as Rio took the audience on tour of several genres of guitar music (complete program at the end of the post). One of the pleasures of keeping records of these recitals in this way is that it is easy to compare from year to year as each student grows through the program. For comparison, have a peek at Rio’s Freshman Recital, his Sophomore Recital, and his Junior Recital!
Rio Manzanares plays solo in Stull Recital Hall
Rio opened with several movements from Bach’s Lute Suite BWV 995. His deft handling of the French ornaments in the Allemande were particularly delicate and nuanced.
He followed with the entire Suite Populaire Brésilienne of Villa-Lobos. He clearly loves this music, a feeling that was particularly evident in the Gavotta-Chôro.
Next up was a delightful romantic variations set by José Broca. Rio handled it with aplomb.
The program concluded with a florid opera arrangement by Mertz. Rio clearly savored the virtuosic passagework at hand, and his efforts were rewarded with a robust standing ovation.
