Spring 2022 Oberlin Guitar Ensemble II

Spring 2022 Oberlin Guitar Ensemble II

We had our second concert of chamber music this semester, again in our acoustically perfect Kulas Recital Hall. This was a substantial program, featuring six works, most of them multi-movement, and the students played at an extremely high level. The non-guitarists who played donated their time and for their dedication and contribution, we all thank them!! They included two singers, a violinist, a violist, a cellist, two flutists and a pianist. This is a brief recap of the program, with the full program reproduced at the end of the post.

Nik Divall started us off with two gorgeous chamber works of John Dowland:

Nik Divall, guitar, with soprano Emma Murphy, violinist Kate Wyly and cellist Diana Reid.

Rio Manzanares followed, with a Giuliani Sonatina for flute and guitar.

Josie Stone closed the first half with two movements from the terrific Sonata for viola and guitar by Rebay:

Caeli Massey opened the second half with an effective flute/guitar arrangement of a jazzy piano piece by Margaret Bonds, the arrangement by guitarist Connie Sheu:

Soprano Nisha Caiozzi was accompanied by guitarist Damian Goggans in songs by Rodrigo:

The program concluded with movements two and three from Schubert’s Arpeggione Sonata. Suvan Agarwal at the guitar and Yuhki Ueda, pianist, presented it; they had played the first movement in our previous Ensemble concert.

After the concert, we enjoyed an end-of-semester celebratory dinner together at Oberlin’s new (terrific) Thai restaurant “Thi Ni Thai.” Caeli, for whom this was her final Oberlin performance before graduating and moving on (to René Izquierdo’s program in Milwaukee), was surprised by her family who joined us all, having just driven up from West Virginia. We will miss her! After eating, we posed for a shot together.

Thank you all, for a terrific and impressively productive year!!
