Nik Divall's Sophomore Recital

Nik Divall's Sophomore Recital

I really like it when the student’s enthusiasm (and talent) leads to learning new music quickly. But students playing two full solo recitals in one academic year is very unusual. Nik played his first recital this year in October; this one, on May 7, was a mere seven months later. And it was terrific. He played a mostly Latin-American program, with works by Villa-Lobos, Ponce and Barrios, plus a nod to the grand European Romantic tradition with a selection of Mertz. Here are some photos from the proceedings. (The full program follows.)

Nik Divall, in Stull Recital Hall

The rush for performance spaces at the end of the spring semester makes for some unusual time slots. This one, at 11a on a Sunday, was unfortunate. Even so, Nik pulled about 25 eager well-wishers out for his program. The light green spring leaves were just beginning to color the tree-tops behind him.

Nik plays with expressive intensity and sophisticated nuance. He always seems to enjoy himself when performing.

The concert was on Mother’s Day, and as it happened, his mother was able to attend, a happy moment indeed!

We look forward to more performances like this one!!
