Oberlin Fall Guitar Ensemble Concert

We had our Fall Guitar Ensemble concert this week. As is usually the case, it was primarily a program of mixed chamber music. We featured a soprano and a tenor, two flutists and a percussionist, a violinist and a pianist, in addition to showcasing a guitar quartet. The quartet played a new piece by a young New York-based composer. Details below. Here are some stills from the show; the full program follows.

Rebecca Klein, guitarist, with violinist Christine Showalter, give a riveting and highly polished performance of music of Paganini:

Flutist Lily Xie and guitarist Collin Sterne are brilliantly accompanied by percussionist Patrick Graney on music of Machado:

Here, a quartet made up of, from left, Mohit Dubey, Rebecca Stein, Brian King and Leonard Ranallo, give the first Ohio performance of selections from an Aaron Silverstein Suite: The performance was expertly prepared and well-received (Leonard Ranallo, director and first-chair):

Tenor Nicholas Music and guitarist Mohit Dubey gave perhaps the best student performance of Britten's 

Folksong Arrangements

 I've ever heard:

Flutist Katie Kim and guitarist Brian King played Piazzolla with creative artistry and verve:

Soprano Theodora Nestorova (incorrectly noted on the program) and guitarist Stephen Fazio gave an affecting reading of songs of Granados:

Finally, Leonard Ranallo played with conviction and control, the entire Villa-Lobos Concerto, accompanied by pianist Evan Hines:
