Bodian and Lippke play for Sergio Assad
As part of the Cleveland Classical Guitar Society Artist Series, the Assad Duo played this season. After the concert, Sergio taught a master class (April 30/May 1). For the master class, CCGS Director Erik Mann invited area teachers to each contribute a performer. In doing so, he effectively made the event an area-wide, inclusive opportunity; a decision much appreciated by all of us in the region. The performers I selected from Oberlin were the guitar duo of Jonathan Bodian and Aidan Wiley Lippke. Bodian and Lippke had played three movements from Radames Gnattali's beloved Suite Retratos, one of my favorite works for two guitars, on our Guitar Ensemble concert the week before and were sounding great. Further, the Suite Retratos had long ago been recorded by Sergio and Odair and was one of their longstanding concert works. For the class, the duo played the first movement, Pixinguinha (Choro).
Unfortunately, I couldn't be there (I was in a rehearsal); these photos were taken by Erik Mann.
Many thanks to Erik and the CCGS for hosting the Assad's and for making the class available in this way. And congratulations to Aidan and Jonathan for playing so beautifully this extraordinary work.
